The American College of Surgeons is pleased to announce two new international scholarship programs for surgeons from countries other than the United States, its Possessions or Canada.

The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP ®) offers International ACS NSQIP Scholarships in the amount of $10,000 each for two surgeons from countries other than the United States or Canada who demonstrate strong interests in surgical quality improvement. The scholarships provide the Scholars with an opportunity to attend the ACS NSQIP National Conference July 21-24, 2012 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and meet with Program Leadership and Surgeon Champions from ACS NSQIP participating hospitals.  Following the NSQIP conference, the candidate is encouraged to visit 1-2 hospitals reflecting the candidate’s specific clinical interests.  These hospitals should also have strong quality programs. The deadline for receipt of all application materials for this scholarship program is 1 May 2012.  The complete requirements and application form can be accessed at this link: http://www.facs.org/memberservices/isnsqip.html.

Two international scholarships in the amount of $10,000 each, focused on surgical education, provide young faculty members the portunity to participate in a variety of educational opportunities for faculty development and enhancement that will result in acquisition of new knowledge and skills in surgical education and training.  This knowledge and these skills will be useful in improving surgical education and training at the scholar’s home institution and Country.  The two scholars will participate in the Annual ACS Clinical Congress, including the course Surgical Education:  Principals and Practice Course, as well as other plenary sessions and courses that address surgical education and training across the continuum of professional development.  There may be a focus on the needs of practicing surgeons, surgery residents, medical students, and members of the surgical team, or on building knowledge and skills in evaluating and adopting new surgical technologies into surgical practice.  Following the Clinical Congress, the scholars will visit appropriate Level I ACS-accredited  Education Institutes or similarly recognized and established centers with a plan of study and interaction tailored to their particular education-based focus.  The scholarship will facilitate involvement of the scholar in subsequent collaborative ventures in education and training under the aegis of the ACS Division of Education. Como es de su conocimiento, hace 2 meses celebramos nuestro XIX Congreso Latinoamericano de Cirugía FELAC, en forma conjunta con el XXXV Congreso Internacional de Cirugía General, en Veracruz, México.

El congreso de realizó de forma exitosa y se obtuvieron resultados muy satisfactorios, con un cálido recibimiento y un trato de verdaderos amigos.  Contamos con la asistencia de algunos de nuestros Ex-presidentes y de la mayoría de los Presidentes de las sociedades miembros de FELAC. Se contó con un número muy alto de Cirujanos Mexicanos pero tristemente pocos de resto de Latino América.

En él continuaremos la misión de  la SVC, aplicando su principio  fundamental, que es la formación y capacitación  continua del cirujano. Fomentar   la investigación quirúrgica de alto nivel, la divulgación  de los conocimientos, el intercambio de tecnología e información con los otros países   del mundo. Inculcar y exaltar los  valores éticos, morales y culturales de los cirujanos de Venezuela.

Se ha completado la programación de 6 cursos pre congreso, varias de las  conferencia plenarias magistrales que serán usadas para honrar a destacadísimos  cirujanos nacionales, así como varios de los simposios y mesas redondas.

Por diversos temas de interés compartido, participan varias Sociedades  Venezolanas de Especialidades en nuestro programa en simposios conjuntos.

Se le está dando preferencia a la  modalidad de mesas redondas para que ustedes participen con sus preguntas y  opiniones en los tópicos allí planteados.

Aún hay tiempo y espacios en el programa, y las ideas de los miembros de la  SVC son útiles, hágalas llegar.

La experiencia adquirida en las dos jornadas nacionales recientes  facilitará la realización eficiente de las diversas actividades a cumplir.

Se está elaborando un programa social y de acompañantes atractivo que  permitirá disfrutar de la calidez y bellezas   que nos brinda la región zuliana.

Las monedas canjeables son: euros, dólares estadounidenses, dólares canadienses, libras esterlinas, pesos mexicanos y francos suizos, al cambio del día.

El precio del stand modular interior montado es de 100.00 CUC por m2, esto cubre todo el período de exposición e incluye:

MedPAC CONSIDERS ALTERNATIVES TO SGR, CUTS FOR SURGERY

The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) has been meeting September 15-16 to discuss a variety of recommendations regarding Medicare payment policy. The first item on MedPAC’s agenda was a discussion of the need to remove the sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula as a means of calculating Medicare physician payments. As reported in the past, Medicare payments are scheduled to be reduced 29.5 percent from current levels on January 1, 2012, because of the SGR. At the meeting, MedPAC revealed a draft recommendation that would cut Medicare payments for non-primary care physicians by 5.9 percent annually for three years, followed by a seven-year payment freeze. The commission also would place a 10-year freeze on payments to primary care physicians. Consequently, after three years of implementation, the conversion factor for surgeons and other specialists would be approximately $28, while the conversion factor for primary care physicians would remain at the current rate of almost $34. MedPAC also released additional draft recommendations that have the potential to further reduce payments to surgeons and other non-primary care physicians as well. MedPAC intends to vote on, and is expected to approve, these recommendations at its October meeting.

The American College of Surgeons has repeatedly called on Congress to stop the 29.5 percent cut in Medicare payments and has adamantly opposed proposals, such as those released by MedPAC this week, that would finance increased payments to primary care physicians through reduced payments for surgical care and other important physician services. The College will continue to ask Congress to stop the pending payment cuts and will continue to oppose such unbalanced and inequitable proposals that would promote one group of physicians while threatening patient access to surgical care.  For more information regarding MedPAC’s recommendations, CLICK HERE. DR. SACHDEVA HONORED WITH MARGARET HAY EDWARDS ACHIEVEMENT MEDAL

During the 2011 International Cancer Education Conference, September 8-10, in Buffalo, NY, Ajit Sachdeva, MD, FRCSC, FACS, the Director of the American College of Surgeons Division of Education, received the highest honor bestowed by the American Association for Cancer Education (AACE), the Margaret Hay Edwards Achievement Medal for “Outstanding Contributions to Cancer Education.” A trailblazer in the field of cancer education, Margaret Hay Edwards, MD, for whom the award was named, established and then directed the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Training and Education Grant Program for more than 18 years. Dr. Hays also enthusiastically supported the AACE, a multidisciplinary national organization focused on advancing both professional and patient education.

Dr. Sachdeva, a former AACE president, delivered the association’s Samuel C. Harvey, MD, Memorial Lecture in 2006. He also served as a member and chair of the Scientific Review Group Education Subcommittee (Study Section) of the National Cancer Institute, responsible for a large portfolio of education and training grants that evolved from the grant program established by Dr. Edwards.

Dr. Sachdeva received his medical training at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India. He completed a surgery residency at the Hospital of Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and has held specialty certification in surgery since 1981. Dr. Sachdeva began to pursue a specialty in medical education and academic administration in 1995 when he participated in the Harvard Macy Institute Program for Leaders in Medical Education in Boston, MA. Today, Dr. Sachdeva is an adjunct professor of surgery at The Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL.

As part of its Inspiring Quality initiative, the American College of Surgeons is talking to patients, surgeons, and health care leaders from around the country about what inspires them to provide the highest quality surgical care. APPLY NOW FOR CLOWES ACS/AAST/NIGMS DEVELOPMENT AWARD
The American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) announce a program that will provide supplemental funding totaling up to $75,000 per year to an individual who has received a Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (K08/K23). The award supports a three-, four-, or five-year period of supervised research experience that may integrate didactic studies with laboratory or clinically based research. The application deadline is October 12, 2011.
The award, sponsored in part by The Clowes Fund, Inc., offers a means to facilitate the career development of individuals pursuing careers in trauma-surgery research by enhancing salary support over and above that offered by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). The K08/K23 mechanism and the completed K08 or K23 application must be submitted simultaneously by the deadline date to the NIGMS and the ACS Scholarships Administrator. Preexisting applications and awards are not eligible for consideration. If applicants receive a K08 or K23 from NIGMS, their applications will undergo further review by a special committee for prospective supplemental funding. Funding will begin on July 1, 2012.

ONCOLOGY SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM APPLICATIONS DUE NOVEMBER 1

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) Commission on Cancer (CoC) is offering a two-year fellowship in surgical oncology outcomes and health services research beginning July 1, 2012. The application deadline is November 1, 2011. The CoC has one position available every two years for a surgical resident who has completed two or three years of clinical training in the United States or Canada. The fellow will work within the Cancer Programs Department of the ACS to conduct clinical research and further the research agenda of the CoC’s National Cancer Data Base (NCDB) with the goal of improving the quality of care for the cancer patient.

PARTICIPATE IN SURVEY REGARDING PERIOPERATIVE ANTIPLATELET THERAPY

How surgeons manage perioperative antiplatelets in patients with coronary stents undergoing non-cardiac surgery is the subject of a current survey being conducted by surgeons from Johns Hopkins Hospital, in Baltimore, MD. Although surgeons typically consult cardiologists to help in preoperative evaluations and recommendations in stent patients undergoing surgical procedures, the ultimate decisions regarding when to stop aspirin and/or plavix and when to restart after surgery rest on the surgeon, whose opinion is often discordant with cardiology recommendations and the perceived risks of bleeding. Survey results will shed light on how non-cardiac surgeons make these decisions. Cardiac surgeons will not be included in the analysis.

FACULTY RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS FOR 2012-2014 NOW AVAILABLE

Through the contributions of Fellows, Chapters, and friends, the American College of Surgeons offers faculty research fellowships to surgeons entering academic careers in surgery or a surgical specialty.  Applications are due November 1, 2011. The fellowship award of $40,000 annually is intended to assist a surgeon in the establishment of a new and independent research program. Applicants should have demonstrated their potential to work as independent investigators.

The two-year Franklin H. Martin, MD, FACS, Faculty Research Fellowship honors the College’s founder. The two-year C. James Carrico MD, FACS, Faculty Research Fellowship is dedicated to trauma and critical care research.  The one-year Louis Argenta, MD, FACS, Faculty Research Fellowship is dedicated to wound care research.

NATIONAL SPECIALTY HOSPITALISTS MEETING TO BE HELD IN NOVEMBER

Many specialties are adopting a hospital-focused model of practice, including Acute Care Surgery. The first national meeting about specialty hospitalists, “The Hospital Staff of Tomorrow Starts Here,” will bring together health care leaders on Friday, November 4, 2011, in Las Vegas, NV, to explore the hospital-focused model of practice, including the following topics:

·         Why specialty hospitals are turning to this model, and the prevalence of the trend
·         Staffing models, night coverage, and provider career sustainability
·         Effects on clinical quality, patient outcomes, health care economics, and liability
·         Projections about the future of hospital medical staffs and related issues (for example, the effect on training and credentialing)
·         The relationship between this practice model and health care reform
John F. Sweeney, MD, FACS, W. Dean Warren Professor of Surgery and chief of general and GI surgery at Emory University School of Medicine, in Atlanta, GA, is a member of the meeting steering committee. The day-long program will include didactic presentations, a panel discussion of hospital-focused physicians from several specialties, and breakout sessions by specialty to promote networking.

The International Relations Committee of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) announces the availability of the 2013 ACS Traveling Fellowship to Australia and New Zealand (ANZ). College Fellows up to age 45 with an academic appointment in the U.S. or Canada are invited to apply for the fellowship, which offers financial assistance for one surgeon to attend and present a lecture at the 2013 annual meeting of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Auckland, ANZ, May 6-10, 2013. The Traveling Fellow will also be expected to visit hospitals in at least two other cities, in addition to Auckland, to observe, interact with colleagues, and represent the College, as well as attend the annual meeting of the College’s ANZ Chapter.

The Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST) announces two 2012 scholarship programs.
